Move an existing Home Assistant onto VomeHome

Upload a backup, let the checks run, and restore your whole system onto a VomeHome server — with a rollback point taken first and a report at the end.

This is the same import we used to move a real house onto hosted infrastructure, so the awkward parts below are ones we hit ourselves.

Before you start

  • Your VomeHome server should be running a Home Assistant version at least as new as your backup. Restoring a newer backup onto an older system is refused — update the server first.
  • Allow roughly three times your backup size in free space on the target. A 4 GB backup wants about 12 GB free.
  • Zigbee and Z-Wave USB sticks cannot follow a machine into a datacentre. The checks flag them and suggest a network-attached adaptor.

  1. On your existing system: Settings → System → Backups → Download backup. Take a full backup — see full and partial backups.
  2. On your VomeHome server page, choose Import a backup.
  3. Upload the .tar. If it is encrypted, supply the password from your Home Assistant emergency kit now.
  4. Wait for the checks. Reading a large archive takes a few minutes; the page updates itself and says which step it is on.
  5. Review the results, then press Start migration.
  6. The restore runs through six steps and reports each one. Home Assistant is unavailable while it rebuilds itself.
  7. Afterwards, the credential we held is no longer valid — the restore replaced it. Create a long-lived access token in the restored Home Assistant and paste it into re-link.
  8. Your verification report appears automatically.

A safety snapshot is taken first

Before anything changes, the target server is snapshotted. If the restore fails, or you simply dislike the result, roll back from the same page and the server returns to exactly how it was.

If something goes wrong

It failed part-way. Use Try again. Your uploaded backup is still on the server, so you do not upload it twice, and the checks re-run against the target as it is now.

You want the old state back. Use Roll back. The snapshot is kept until the migration is finished with.
